Our Story: A Better Way to Snack 🇨🇦

The Problem: A "Healthy" Snack That Wasn't

Like most parents and professionals, I was constantly on the move and needed snacks that could keep up. But every option I found was highly processed and loaded with hidden sugars, sweeteners, and "mystery" ingredients I didn’t recognize. I found myself in a frustrating cycle: eating things I knew weren't healthy, or worse, not knowing what was actually inside.

I realized that for families like mine, a truly honest snack didn't exist. So, I decided to build one.

The Spark: From Kitchen to Community

Using real food—oats, nuts, seeds, and fruit—I created simple, natural snacks that my family loved. In 2019, my daughter asked if we could bring our creations to a local farmers’ market. I said, "Sure—why not?"

From that first market in St. John’s, we heard the same thing over and over: “Finally, a snack without all the sugar!” That’s when I knew our family hobby had become a business. While we make many more bars today, our core recipes and vision haven't changed: real food and total transparency. We even put our ingredients on the front of the pack with a clear window, because if the food is truly good, you shouldn’t have to hide it.

Our Three Promises

  • 1. Zero "Sneaky" Sweeteners We don't hide behind "natural flavors" or complex syrups. We rely on the natural sweetness of real fruit—like our Canadian-grown wild blueberries—to provide flavor without the sugar crash.

  • 2. Proudly Made in St. John’s, NL We are a family-run business based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Every bar is made and shipped from our home on the East Coast, reflecting the honesty and grit of the place where we live and train.

  • 3. A Fully Canadian Supply Chain We work inside the Canadian economy, sourcing directly from local farmers or trusted partners for ingredients like coconut. This extends to our packaging; our wrappers and cartons are both designed and printed right here in Canada.

The Long Game

Whether I’m on a hike, in a meeting, or at the warehouse, I’m reminded that health is a marathon, not a sprint. We’re here to provide the fuel for your "long game"—from powering your morning overnight oats to your next East Coast trail.

By choosing The Oat Company, you’re supporting Canadian farmers, local designers, and a vision for a more transparent food industry.

Thank you for being part of our story.
